How it works

South Africa taxes income in brackets from 18% to 45%. Everyone gets a primary rebate of R17 820 a year, with extra rebates from age 65 and 75, so no tax is due on the first R99 000 a year for people under 65.

Medical aid members get a tax credit of R376 a month for themselves and the first dependant, and R254 for each extra dependant. UIF is 1% of salary, capped at R177 a month.

Questions

How is PAYE worked out?

Your monthly salary is multiplied by 12, taxed using the SARS table for the year, reduced by the rebate for your age and any medical aid tax credits, then divided by 12.

How much is UIF?

Employees pay 1% of their salary to UIF, on earnings up to R17 712 a month, so the most anyone pays is R177.

Why is my payslip slightly different?

Payslips can include pension or retirement annuity contributions, bonuses, fringe benefits and other deductions that this estimate leaves out. Your employer’s payroll uses the exact SARS tables.

Is this tax advice?

No. It’s an estimate to help you understand your payslip. For your own tax situation, speak to a registered tax practitioner or check with SARS.
