Need help? Ask your public university or TVET financial aid office, or contact a NYDA branch listed by NSFAS (new tab). Check assistance before travelling.

Already studying or returning?

Continuing students must pass the required modules and remain within the allowed study time. Returning after a break or changing between university and TVET requires a new application. Ask your institution to confirm the rules for 2027. The detailed policy currently linked by NSFAS is for 2026; this checker does not apply its pass percentages as 2027 rules.

How it works

Uses the income limits in NSFAS’s current 2027 application guide and the application dates already listed on this site. Monthly income is multiplied by 12. Choosing an institution later is allowed, but the final qualification must be approved at a public institution.

Official sources and limits of this check

This is a bursary check. It does not decide academic progress, allowed years of funding, individual progression routes or loan eligibility. Older allowance amounts are not used.

Questions

What counts as household income?

Household income is your income plus your parents’ income, or your legal guardians’ if applicable, before tax and other deductions. If married, use yours and your spouse’s. NSFAS has separate rules for financially independent or legally emancipated applicants. Include income from all sources. Use the household details NSFAS asks for on your application.

Do I qualify if my parent gets a Child Support Grant?

A Child Support Grant in your household can meet the income requirement once NSFAS verifies it. Foster Child and Care Dependency grants are also named in the 2027 guidance. This does not automatically approve funding: citizenship, an approved public qualification and academic requirements still apply. SRD alone is not treated as this automatic route.

Can I apply before my matric results?

You can apply while in Grade 12, before final results or an institution’s acceptance. NSFAS confirms results later.

What does NSFAS cover?

The bursary can cover registration and tuition, learning materials, living and personal care allowances, and approved accommodation or transport. Support depends on the qualification, institution and approved funding rules; it does not cover every cost automatically.
