How it works

Each university works out its score differently. This tool uses each one’s own published method: the standard APS for UP and UJ, Wits’s 8-point APS with bonus points for English and Maths, UKZN’s APS with 8 points for 90% and above, UCT’s Faculty Points Score, and Stellenbosch’s average percentage. The APS calculator and the university calculators (Wits, UP, UJ, UCT, Stellenbosch, UKZN, UFS, NWU) show the working.

It then checks each programme’s minimum score and the subject minimums it lists, such as Mathematics 60% or English 50%. Every minimum comes from the university’s own 2027 prospectus or programme page, linked from each programme.

This is a guide, not an offer. Meeting a minimum doesn’t guarantee a place, and universities can change requirements. Always check the linked page before you apply. Closing dates are on the university application dates page.

Questions

What can I study with my matric marks?

Enter your marks and this tool checks them against 134 popular degrees at 8 universities (Wits, UP, UJ, UCT, Stellenbosch, UKZN, UFS, NWU), using each university’s own 2027 score and subject minimums. It shows what you meet, what you’re close to, and what’s missing.

If I meet the minimum, will I get in?

Not necessarily. Minimums are the lowest marks a university will consider. Popular programmes such as medicine, law, engineering and actuarial science get far more applicants than places, so they select the strongest applicants, and some also use National Benchmark Tests (NBTs), interviews or portfolios.

Can I use my Grade 11 or June marks?

Yes. Universities make provisional offers from Grade 11 final or Grade 12 June results and confirm them with your final matric results. Use the marks you have now, and check again when your final results come out in January.

What does “close” mean?

Close means you’re within 2 APS points (20 UCT points, or 3% at Stellenbosch) of the minimum, or a required subject is up to 5% short. Some programmes, especially at Wits, wait-list applicants a few points below the minimum, and a better final mark could get you there.

What if I take Maths Literacy?

Many degrees, including most in commerce, science, engineering and health, need Mathematics. Some programmes accept Maths Literacy, usually with a higher minimum. The results show which.
